LOS ANGELES, CA –  American Dance Movement (ADM), formerly the Dizzy Feet Foundation, has announced that National Dance Day will be celebrated on Saturday, Sept. 17, with a variety of official celebrations and community events across the country. The national holiday, recognized by Congress, is dedicated to supporting and sharing the joys and benefits of dance and movement.

“Dance has always been a powerful medium for individuals of all ages and backgrounds to come together and express themselves artistically,” said Nigel Lythgoe, co-founder of ADM. “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to bring dance to cities around the country and get more people moving together on National Dance Day.”

ADM has been encouraging communities to get moving through dance for more than a decade by funding dance education in underserved communities, as well as educating the public on the many benefits of dance, such as improved cardiovascular health, self-confidence, self-expression, social skills and more.

“We look forward to National Dance Day every year as a celebration of self-expression and as a way to encourage physical activity that anyone can do,” said Adam Shankman, co-founder of ADM.

Since 2010, ADM has created an instructional dance video of the National Dance Day routine that invites participants to learn original choreography and put their own spin on it. The routine brings together dancers and dance enthusiasts around the globe to come celebrate National Dance Day as a form of valuable exercise and of artistic expression. This year’s instructional video will be released in the coming weeks and will include a step-by-step tutorial of the dance.

Anyone may participate in National Dance Day by taping a video of themselves doing the choreographed routine and sharing on social media. National Dance Day celebrations will be held from coast to coast with in-person events in Washington, D.C., Orange County, California, Los Angeles, and West Palm Beach, Florida.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. will highlight the abundance of dance in the D.C. metropolitan area by kicking-off the weekend-long celebration with performances by artists on the Millennium Stage on Thursday, Sept. 15 and Friday, Sept. 16. In addition, the Center is in collaboration with local organization Dance Place and the Center’s Social Impact department to curate the three-day celebration.

At Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, California, the National Dance Day lineup will feature live performances and interactive dance lessons in a wide variety of dance styles from dance artists and local organizations from 1 to 5pm PT. The day will begin with a warmup with Studio D: Arts School for All Abilities, and all ages, abilities and levels are welcomed to join.
