KURTIS BLOW DISCUSSES HIP HOP NUTCRACKER

Kurtis Blow, one of the founding fathers of Hip Hop, discusses the holiday show THE HIP HOP NUTCRACKER. In this video filmed in 2018, Blow talks about how he got involved with the show and what makes it a truly unique way to kick-off the holidays. The one-of-a-kind production takes the classic holiday tale and gives it a modern, hip hop twist, complete with an all-star cast dancing to the original score by Tchaikovsky. Blow will kick off our presentation of the show (December 10) with a special set. THE HIP HOP NUTCRACKER is the perfect way to get ready for the holidays!

LA OPERA “AFTER HOURS:” SONGS OF PROTEST

AFTER HOURS: SONGS OF PROTEST, filmed in June of 2021, honors and celebrates incredible music that galvanizes social justice. This program of iconic songs made famous by performers like Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke, and many others, was curated by host Russell Thomas. Soprano Brandie Sutton, baritone Justin Austin, drummer Jonathan Barber, pianist Damien Sneed and bass player Michael Olatuja delivered extraordinary performances. Damien Sneed and soprano Brandie Sutton will be performing at the Kravis Center as part of our PEAK series in a performance that highlights the most well-known operatic arias on January 29 (OUR SONG, OUR STORY-THE NEW GENERATION OF BLACK VOICES), you won’t want to miss it!

RENÉE FLEMING – BREATHING EXERCISES FOR BETTER HEALTH

Soprano Renée Fleming, who will be performing at the Kravis Center on January 2, introduces HEALING BREATH; a series of breathing exercises shared by opera singers, actors and Broadway stars for anyone trying to regain breath after illness. In this special collaboration with The Kennedy Center and Google Arts & Culture, Renée shares her passion as a Health Advocate and expertise as an acclaimed vocalist.

They are recognized around the world for their innovation, creativity and preservation of predominately African-American traditions in dance. Enjoy this discussion with the company’s Founder & Artistic Director, Joan Myers Brown as she shares her experiences and how she dealt with overwhelming bias to attain success in the world of dance as a black ballerina in the era of segregation. Check out this intimate concert featuring Bria Skonberg that was recorded in 2017 at Paste Studios in New York. Skonberg, accompanied by three fellow musicians, performs songs from her album WITH A TWIST, among other tunes.
