St. Petersburg’s the new superstar maestro, Vasily Petrenko, draws on his heritage and the great RNO in two ultra- Russian masterworks: Prokofiev’s stirring Fifth Symphony, written as a rallying call to the Russian people during the darkest hours of World War II, and Tchaikovsky’s dazzling and iconic piano concerto, starring Tchaikovsky Competition Gold Medalist Barry Douglas.
